TEFAF New York

New York, yılda iki kere sanat dünyasının merkez üssüne dönüşüyor. Mayıs ve eylül aylarında şehir; müzayede satışları, galeri açılışları, müze sergileri ve Frieze’den NADA’ya kadar bir sürü sanat fuarının odak noktası haline geliyor. Sanat haftası boyunca şehirde bu kadar çok etkinlik olurken ele alınacak heyecan verici hikâyeler de eksik olmuyor; ancak, bu yıl kişisel favorim olan TEFAF New York’a odaklanmayı seçtim.

TEFAF (Avrupa Sanat Fuarı), New York sanat haftasının temel taşlarından biri. Fuar dünyanın dört bir yanından gelen sanat eserleri, antika ve tasarımın olağanüstü bir vitrinini sunuyor. 1988 yılında Maastricht’te kurulan ve 2016 yılında New York’ta ilk kez düzenlenen fuar, o zamandan beri dünyanın önde gelen güzel sanatlar ve tasarım etkinliklerinden biri hâline geldi. Maastricht’i henüz ziyaret etmemiş olsam da, her yıl New York fuarına katılmaya özen gösteriyorum. TEFAF; eski ustalardan, Laurent Grasso ve Jules de Balincourt gibi çağdaş sanatçılara, Egon Schiele ve Amedeo Modigliani’nin yirminci yüzyıl başı ve ortası eserlerine kadar çok çeşitli dönemleri ve sanatsal gelenekleri kapsayan olağanüstü bir seçki sunuyor. TEFAF’ta sanat eserlerinin yanı sıra Antik Yunan, Roma ve Mısır’dan heykeller, mücevherler ve yirminci yüzyıl tasarımları gibi objeler de sergileniyor. Fuarın en önemli özelliklerinden biri, provenansa gösterdiği titizlik. Her bir parçaya kapsamlı belgelerin eşlik etmesi, koleksiyonerlere satın aldıkları eserlerin hem özgünlüğü hem de tarihsel önemi konusunda güven vermekte.

Fuar, her sene büyük sanat etkinliklerine ev sahipliği yapmasıyla tanınan ikonik New York mekânı Park Avenue Armory’de gerçekleştiriliyor. Armory’nin ahşap panelleri, yüksek tavanları ve dramatik mimarisi, bu boyutta bir fuar için mükemmel bir mekân. İçeri adım attığımda her sene olduğu gibi tavandan canlı çiçekler sarkıyordu; ancak, her bir sonraki gelişimde çiçeklerin sayısını azalmış gördüm. İki kata yayılan yerleşim planı, ziyaretçileri fuar boyunca kolaylıkla yönlendirdi. İkinci kattaki balkondan, bir labirente yukarıdan bakar gibi aşağıdaki stantları keşfeden insanların akışını izleyebildim. VIP ön izleme gecesi, önümüzde taze hazırlanan istiridyeler ve kokteyl servisi eşliğinde, sofistike bir ortam ve heyecan verici bir enerjiyle doluydu. VIP günlerinden hemen sonra ve hatta bazen fuar resmî olarak açılmadan önce bile birçok eser satılmıştı…

Her ziyaretin sunacağı yeni bir şey vardı; kendimi ya bir katılımcıyla antik bir Yunan heykeli hakkında sohbet ederken buldum ya da ilk ziyaretimde gözden kaçırdığım, saklı bir Francis Bacon eserini keşfettim. Eserlerin kalitesi hiçbir zaman beni etkilemekte başarısız olmadı. Bu yıl, kendimi Edvard Munch’un eserlerine geri dönerken buldum. Eserlerin derin renkleri, duygusal yoğunlukları beni çok etkiledi.

TEFAF’ta, sanat eserlerinin yanı sıra, olağanüstü kalitede mobilyalardan, nadir bulunan kitaplara kadar bir dizi nesne de yer alıyor. Bazı parçalar geniş bir kültür ve uygarlık anlatısına katkıda bulunurken, diğerleri ise inanılmaz işçilikleri ile dikkat çekiyor. Bu sene de, her zaman olduğu gibi; her bir parça, insanın yaratıcılığını, becerisini ve zengin tarihini yansıtarak farklı dönemlere dair bir perspektif sundu.

TEFAF bu yıl da neden dünyanın en saygın sanat fuarlarından biri olmaya devam ettiğini bir kez daha kanıtladı. Farklı tarihî dönemlere ve kültürlere ait eserlerden özenli seçkisiyle fuar hem entelektüel açıdan zenginleştirici hem de görsel açıdan büyüleyici bir deneyim sundu ve beni sanat dünyasına karşı yenilenmiş bir merak duygusuyla baş başa bıraktı.

Twice a year, New York becomes the epicenter of the global art world. In May and September, the city becomes the focal point for auction sales, gallery openings, museum exhibitions, and a host of art fairs, from Frieze to satellite events like Independent and NADA. With so much happening across the city during art week, there is no shortage of exciting stories to cover, but this year, I have chosen to focus on TEFAF New York, a personal favorite..

TEFAF (The European Fine Art Fair) is a cornerstone of New York’s art week, offering an exceptional showcase of art, antiques, and design from across the globe and throughout history. Founded in 1988 in Maastricht, the fair has since become one of the world’s leading events for fine art and design, with its first edition in New York introduced in 2016. While I have yet to visit Maastricht, though it is certainly on my list, I make it a point to attend the New York fair every year, and it consistently impresses. TEFAF presents an exceptional selection, spanning a wide range of periods and artistic traditions, from the Old Masters to contemporary artists like Laurent Grasso and Jules de Balincourt, to early and mid-20th-century works by Egon Schiele and Amedeo Modigliani. In addition to the art, TEFAF showcases objects such as sculptures from Ancient Greece, Rome, and Egypt, as well as fine jewelry and 20th-century design. A defining feature of the fair is its rigorous attention to provenance. Each piece is accompanied by thorough documentation, giving collectors confidence in both the authenticity and historical significance of their acquisitions.

The fair is housed in the Park Avenue Armory, an iconic New York venue renowned for hosting major art events. The Armory’s wood paneling, high ceilings, and dramatic architecture provide a stunning backdrop for the fair. Upon entering, vibrant purple flowers cascade from the ceiling, though by the week’s end, they seemed to dwindle in number. Spanning two floors, the layout guides visitors through the fair with ease. From the balcony, you can take in the full scope of the event, watching the flow of people as they explore the booths below. The VIP preview night is filled with frenzied energy and sophistication, with wine served and oysters freshly shucked right in front of you. After the VIP days, many works are already sold, sometimes even before the fair officially opens.

Each visit had something new to offer, whether I found myself lost in conversation with an exhibitor about an ancient Greek sculpture or rediscovered a hidden Francis Bacon I had missed during my first pass. The quality of the works never fails to impress, and it is the kind of experience that only deepens the more time you spend with it. This year, I found myself returning to Edvard Munch’s works, drawn in by their raw emotional intensity and bold use of color. His pieces exude psychological depth and dramatic composition, leaving an impression that lingers long after.

In addition to the artwork, TEFAF features a range of objects, from exceptional quality furniture to rare books. Some pieces contribute to a broader narrative of culture and civilization. Others engage you with their incredible craftsmanship and making.  Each piece offers a glimpse into a different period, presenting the breadth of human creativity, skill, and history.

Each year, TEFAF reaffirms why it remains one of the most highly regarded art fairs in the world. With its carefully curated selection of works from diverse historical periods and cultures, the fair offers an experience that is both intellectually enriching and visually captivating, always leaving me with a renewed sense of wonder for the art world.
